Time Is Running Out for Fall Exhibition Field Trips

Albany Museum of Art Field Trips Are Free to Schools

Only a Few Available Dates Remain for Field Trips to See the Fall 2024 Exhibitions

With Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year school breaks approaching, school administrators and teachers who want to schedule free student field trips to see fall exhibitions should schedule them now while timeslots are available.

“Most schools will be on break this week for Thanksgiving and in late December through early January,” Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem said. “We have had numerous classes come in to see David Lanier’s Beauty in the Humble Places retrospective and Jillian Marie Browning’s Rootwork, but the window of opportunity to see those and our other fall exhibitions is closing quickly.”

School field trips may be scheduled to start as early as 9:45 am or as late as 3:30 pm Tuesdays through Fridays. With AMA holiday art day camps beginning on Friday, Dec 20, available dates after the Thanksgiving holidays are Dec 3-6, 10-13, and 17-19. The fall exhibitions close on Saturday, Jan 4, and new exhibitions will open in late January.

School field trips are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“David is one of the nation’s preeminent contemporary painters working in sporting and wildlife, and his realistic depictions of Southwest Georgia landscapes, birds, and animals transport the viewer into the wilds of our region,” Vanoteghem said. “This is also the first time that works spanning his education and career have been in one gallery.

“Jillian’s work in cyanotypes and photography expresses deep connections to spirituality and Southern culture through the lenses of Black hair practices and vegetation. The exhibition’s title, Rootwork, speaks to the roots of hair and Southern healing traditions that have been passed down for generations.”

She said both exhibitions provide excellent opportunities for students to practice reading aloud, vocabulary, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation. Lanier’s exhibition also lends itself to life science classes.

Also on view through Jan 4 are the final installment of the year-long exhibition series Old Master Drawings from the Shaffer Collection and Sixty Years of Masterpieces and Memories, which celebrates donors who have supported the AMA during its first 60 years.

“Students also can see artwork by their contemporaries in our newest exhibition, the inaugural Juried Southwest Georgia Student Art Exhibition,” Vanoteghem said. “It opened during the AMA Heart of Albany Festival on Nov 16 and will continue through Jan 25.”

Educators interested in scheduling a free field trip for a class can find the application link HERE.

“They also can download Field Trip Packets on that webpage and find answers to questions they might have,” Vanoteghem said.
