AMA Family Opening Day Is Jan 25

Kids Can Create Take-Home Art 10 AM-2 PM at Family Opening Day

Saturday  |  Jan 25  |  10 AM-5 PM  |  Free Event

Families can explore four new art exhibitions and create their own artworks at Family Opening Day on Saturday, Jan 25, at the Albany Museum of Art. The event is free and open to the public.

“With school and work schedules, it can be difficult for some to get to the museum during the week,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem said. “We have these free Family Opening Days on Saturdays to make them more easily accessible.”

During Family Opening Day, the AMA Classroom will be open from 10 am until 2 pm. “Kids can work on a fun take-home art project in the classroom,” Vanoteghem said. “All the materials they need will be available at no cost, and there will be plenty of inspiration on the gallery walls with our winter exhibitions.”

The new exhibitions that will be on view are Michael Jones: Polyphonic in the Haley Gallery, Idea Machines: Conceptual Art from the Permanent Collection in the East Gallery, Home: Selections from the Permanent Collection in the McCormack Gallery, and Know, Learn, Wonder: Highlights from the Sub-Saharan African Collection in the Hodges Gallery.

“Saturday the 25th also will be the final opportunity to see some outstanding artwork created by area high school and middle school students in the Juried Southwest Georgia Student Art Exhibition in the West Gallery, which leads into the AMAzing Space activity center,” Vanoteghem said. “We had excellent participation in this first exhibition, and it will be returning again next fall in concert with The Heart of Albany Festival.”

Kids can win prizes while exploring the galleries. “We’ll have a scavenger hunt that families can do together, and it will continue until the museum’s 5 pm closing time,” Vanoteghem said. “Visitors are also welcome to enjoy creative play in AMAzing Space all day. We have areas where adults can relax, chat, or read a book from our library while the kiddos have fun.”

The AMA is located at 311 Meadowlark Drive, just off Gillionville Road and adjacent to the Albany State University West Campus. The museum is open from 10 am until 5 pm on Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission is free.
