Young Cast to Perform Musical on 75 Years of Disney Movie Songs
Thursday | March 14 | 5 PM | Free Admission
UPDATE: This event was rescheduled from March 9 because of inclement weather.
It will be a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious evening on Thursday, March 14, when Kids Take the Stage at the Albany Museum of Art to perform the musical Disney: The Movies, the Music. The program, which was rescheduled from March because of inclement weather, starts at 5 pm in the Willson Auditorium.
“We’re super excited about the performance,” AMA Director of Education and Public Programming Annie Vanoteghem said. “These young actors have been honing their theater skills with Director Vicki Knuckles since late January, and now they are ready to share what they accomplished with family and friends.”
The program celebrates a 75-year span of Disney storytelling through movie soundtracks. “It’s a Hal Leonard musical,” Knuckles said. “It has some of the most popular Disney songs from the movies.” Songs include Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins, Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book, Circle of Life from The Lion King, and a mashup of Mickey Mouse tunes.
Knuckles said she has been impressed by the young actors’ dedication and hard work. The class met for an hour after school every Wednesday and Thursday since from Jan 31 ro March 7. The Kids Take the Stage Players are Amelia Alvey, Lana Anderson, Breazia Bonner, Oaklei Chester, Karley Gillis, Morgan Merideth, Andre Patrick, Mayla Patterson, Morgan Price, Ari Rowe, Emory Sharpe, Layla Thornton, and Aubrey Williams.
“I’ve been blown away by the way they’ve taken it home and learned it,” she said. “They’ve memorized their lines and their songs, and they really seem to enjoy it. This group comes ready!”
Over the weeks, the cast members have learned lyrics, lines, and movement. “The kids have narration that they’ve learned, and some have special parts in the songs,” she said. “They’ve been given their parts and their music, and they’ve been learning it at home as well as in class. We’ve had choreography, music, speaking, and we’ve picked some of our favorite songs and put it all together. The kids have had input on what they like in the choreography.”
The AMA is located at 311 Meadowlark Drive. Admission to the museum and the program is free.
